29 weeks

Baby's now the size of a squash!

Baby's energy is surging, thanks to white fat depositing beneath his skin. And since he's growing so fast things are getting kind of cramped in the womb. You’re probably already getting a little preview of baby’s personality, the more you feel him move. You might get some playful kicks and jabs, and start to feel little hiccups, too!

His muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and his head is getting bigger to accommodate his growing brain – which is busy developing billions of neurons. Every day, about 200 milligrams of calcium is deposited in your baby's skeleton, which is now hardening. With this rapid growth, it's no surprise that your baby's nutritional needs reach their peak during this trimester.

*I seriously feel as though I am as big as I was with the twins. But WOW, when you compare it side by side like this...I really wonder what I have to complain about!  In Cody's words "you were a big son of a bitch!"  (thanks honey, I can always count on you for words of encouragement).
My uterus was measuring 39 weeks at this point with the twins!

I had my 29 week ultrasound and OB visit earlier this week. Everything continues to look great. With the best news being that my placenta has moved up and away from my cervix, so I no longer have to worry about my marginal Placenta Previa and worrying about a c-section!!

Baby is continuing to grow! He now weighs 3lbs. 14oz. (82nd percentile)

His heartrate was 159

He continues to move like crazy!  He is sitting a lot higher than the twins. I never had any issues with baby-in-the-ribs...but I am this time. He's not hurting me yet, but he's just sitting right up there making it difficult to bend over. The worst I've noticed it was the other day when I was typing at my computer at work, and I couldn't lean over to even type. I had to sit back in my chair and try to work him down a bit. Little stinker!

Who do you think he looks like??

maybe a little camera shy?

remember this...??

We're still having MAJOR ISSUES with it...

Little Miss seems to have gotten this small idea in her head that she needs to have her paci in her mouth ALL the time.

She makes her way to her room and then will hang on her crib (if she sees one in there) otherwise she will hang on her dresser drawer (where she knows we keep them, even though we've moved them and have shown her that several times) and moan and whine and cry.

Sometimes she must even be able to reach it if one is in her crib, because out of the blue she'll be walking around the house with it in her mouth....wait a second!! I think NOT!!

She really has gotten away from needing one in the car, unless our trip is a little longer.

And at times, she will even go to bed without it.

But it's those "in-between" times where we seem to be butting heads a bit!

And let me tell you, she is a strong-willed child!

28 weeks

Baby's now the size of a rutabaga!

Baby can blink his eyes, which now sport lashes. With his eyesight developing, he may be able to see the light that filters in through your womb. He's also developing billions of neurons in his brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world. His lungs are also mature enough that he'd probably survive if he was born now. Wow!

I've made it to the third trimester! Where has the time gone?!?

Pregnancy Symptoms I'm experiencing at 28 weeks:

• Trouble sleeping: I just can't seem to get comfortable once I crawl into bed. I'm kind of a "flopper" when it comes to sleep. I don't like to stay in one position any too long and I always enjoy sleeping on my stomach. Lately though, the only position I can get comfortable in is laying on my left side with a pillow between my legs and a pillow under my stomach. The problem is, I just can't stay like this for very long. When I lay on my back, my arms and legs fall asleep. If I lay on my right side, my arms and legs fall asleep. And we know how well it's working to sleep on my stomach at this point :(

• Shortness of breath: I'm still dealing with this most significantly in the mornings before leaving the house. But it seems to catch me off guard throughout the day too. Or, of course, any time I attempt to do too much with the kids.

• Aches and pains: I'm really not sure how I did this whole pregnancy thing with twins!  I'm amazed every single day that I was able to carry two babies!!  I do have to say though that I'm glad I had the twins first, because every time I want to complain, I just think about how much worse it was during my last pregnancy. Then I seem to gain a little more perspective and realize "it's not that bad!"  This pregnancy though, I seem to be having more circulation issues. At night, I will often wake up to a limb completely numb. And during the day, my right hip and thigh are frequently tingly and numb. He must be hitting some sort of nerve in there or something!

• Braxton Hicks contractions: lovely!

27 weeks

Baby's now the size of a head of cauliflower!

It's official: Baby's showing brain activity! And his brain will keep on getting more complex. Baby's lungs are also going through some major developments these days, which (combined with the opening of previously plugged nostrils) means he's now able to practice inhaling and exhaling. The lack of air in your womb means every "breath" is filled with amniotic fluid, but hey -- it's progress. While his lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning - with a lot of medical help - if he were born now. He's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing his eyes, and perhaps even sucking on his fingers.

Baby's now the size of a head of lettuce!

Baby is soaking up your antibodies, getting his immune system ready for life outside the womb. His eyes are forming and will soon start to open, and his eyelashes are now grown too! The network of nerves in your baby's ears is better developed and more sensitive than before. He may now be able to hear both your voice and your partner's as you chat with each other. He's inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of his lungs. These so-called breathing movements are also good practice for when he's born and takes that first gulp of air. And he's continuing to put on baby fat. If it's a boy, his testicles are beginning to descend into his scrotum — a trip that will take two to three days.

25 weeks

Baby's now the size of an eggplant!

That oh-so-handy sense of equilibrium is kicking in, and baby's learning to distinguish right side up from upside down. He is beginning to exchange his long, lean look for some baby fat. As he does, his wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and he'll start to look more and more like a newborn. He's also growing more hair — and if you could see it, you'd now be able to discern its color and texture.

I had my 25 week ultrasound and OB visit on Tuesday. I went by myself as Cody's sick days are already dwindling down and it's only February! At my ultrasounds, they continue to check out all of the organs and monitor baby's growth. He's growing alright!  Weighing in at 2lbs. 1oz. (putting him in the 76th percentile). They said he has a big head and a big belly. Already taking after both dad and mom :)

My placenta continues to remain close to my cervix (marginal placenta previa), but the doctor still feels confident it will move. They would like to have seen it move by week 32, so we have plenty of time yet.

I am still feeling pretty great. My heartburn has kicked into full force and I am taking Zantac around the clock to keep it under control. I'm also having a short period every morning where I feel very exhausted and am out of breath, feeling like a ton of bricks is sitting on my chest. Not sure what that's about, but it's usually at the same time every morning and goes away on it's own.

Here is the latest picture of our little peanut:

18 month schedule

Here is what 18 months looks like around our house. It doesn't vary significantly from our previous schedules...let's just say we like our routines around here :)

I've always said...our routine works great when we're on, but when we are off, it's a BAD BAD thing!

5:30am Mommy wakes up for the day

6:10am Daddy wakes up for the day

6:15/6:20ish Daddy wakes the kids up. I lay their clothes out, but then Cody changes their diapers and gets them dressed. They are typically crabby in the morning and typically throw screaming fits all while this is taking place.

6:30am the kids get in their highchairs for a "small snack" and some milk (something that will tide them over until breakfast at daycare).

When they get out of their chairs, they both get their Flovent inhalers and then their teeth brushed (something they continue to fight us on EVERY.SINGLE.DAY)

**right now because they are sick, their Flovent inhalers are followed by their Albuterol inhalers (which makes things even worse) and also their eye drops (which really puts the tantrums into full gear!)

7:00am coats on and start loading the car. Depending on the morning, it varies whether or not they will throw a fit getting into their car seats. The screaming, however, can usually be taken care of with a rousing rendition of "Do Lord" (although sometimes it does take two rounds).

7:15/7:20ish drop the kids off at daycare

7:30am start my work day

3:40pm pick up the kids from daycare. More often than not they have a tantrum trying to get them into their carseats (are you seeing a pattern here?)

4:00pm home, playtime, mommy has a snack that usually has to be shared, attempting to think about getting dinner started, starting dinner, and anything else I feel so motivated to get done.

5:00 daddy home from work YAYYY!!!  This is the kids' (and mine) favorite time of the day! They love their daddy so much and both can't get enough of him when he gets home. This is the time I can get them off of my legs for two seconds to usually finish up dinner.

5:30ish dinner time, clean up, wash dishes, play time, get organized for bath/bed time

6:30ish bath time, followed by screaming while trying to get pajamas on, and then a bedtime bottle

7:00pm bed time. Although, most often anymore, they are both in bed and asleep BEFORE 7:00 (it's awesome!)

*The kids are down to one nap a day while at daycare. Typically on the weekends though, Kenley still often gets two naps.

*They have become very picky eaters and at times hardly even eat anything. It makes meal planning very challenging. They love their milk though!

*Kenley wears size 24 month/2T clothes, Kaden wears 12-18/18-24 month clothes

*Kenley wears size 5/6 diapers, Kaden wears size 4/5 diapers

*Kenley continues to be extremely attached to her pacifier. I just don't seem to have the heart to take it away from her.

*Kenley has become a HUGE bully!!  It's driving us crazy. She will "attack" just completely out of the blue. We have started putting her in time-out and she does not like it one bit!

*Kaden is a sneaky toy thief. He often slowly walks up to Kenley and just tries to quietly take whatever she has in her hands away from her. When he does it though, he usually has something else in his hand to offer in exchange. Kenley doesn't always fall for it though and then things can get a little heated.

*They are typically good at sharing...AS LONG AS THERE'S TWO OF SOMETHING! It's pretty sweet to watch them make sure the other one has something. But, if there is only one, then it's usually a fight.

*Kaden is the biggest copy-cat around! He has to do absolutely everything that Kenley does. If Kenley walks by and touches the wall, Kaden will have to walk by and touch the same wall. If Kenley trips and falls on accident, Kaden will have to purposefully throw himself to the floor. It's rather humorous!

*They are both very much making their way into the terrible two's and testing our limits in every way possible. Cody and I are literally exhausted at the end of the night after they go to bed from all the tantrums, screaming, fighting, and not listening. I know it's their age and we will get through it, but it sure is tough right now!

Although 18 months is a challenging time, they continue to amaze us every single day. They are getting so funny and so smart, it's just fun to sit back and watch. The non-tantrum-throwing-times are absolutely amazing and I can't get enough of these two! The kisses they give at the end of the night while tucking them into bed make it all worth it :) Our God is an awesome God, and while there may be 100 things that make me want to cry, there are 1,000 things that make me smile!!

18 months

How the heck have we reached 18 months already?!?

The kids had their well baby check on Wednesday. Here are some highlights of our visit:

Growth:
Kaden:
Weight: 24lbs. 13oz. (30th percentile)
Height: 32 inches (38th percentile)

Kenley:
Weight: 30lbs 10oz. (98th percentile)
Height: 32 inches (60th percentile)

Diagnosis:
Kaden:
*routine health check
*cough
*congestion
*pink-eye
*wheezing
*diarrhea

Kenley:
*routine health check
*cough
*congestion
*pink-eye

Medications:
Kaden:
*Flovent Inhaler
*Albuterol Inhaler
*Albuterol Nebulizer
*antibiotic eye drops

Kenley:
*Flovent Inhaler
*Albuterol Inhaler
*antibiotic eye drops

*They both rocked in their development scores...except for their communication, which was once again the lowest, barely reaching the cut-off. MADDENING!!

*They really are saying a lot more words, you just have to listen closely for them. They are not imitating, or maybe they are just refusing to imitate. And they are not yet putting words together, unless you call "uh-uh-uh-uh-uh" a phrase :) If you hear them say something, it's simply because you caught it. I've started writing their words down so that I can really prove to myself that they do have some, rather than thinking they have nothing.

*On paper, Kaden is actually slightly ahead on his development, even though the dr. says girls typically develop faster than boys. I think Kenley is too stubborn to show us what she can really do :)

*They were supposed to get shots, however because they were not feeling well, they held off. Now I have to bring them in at a later date to get vaccinated.

*I think we were in the tiniest, HOTTEST, room in the entire clinic. We were all sweating!

*Kaden pooped 3 times in the hour we were there.

*Our Pediatrician can actually talk like Donald Duck...the kids were mesmerized.

24 weeks

Baby's now the size of a grapefruit!

Baby cuts a pretty lean figure at this point, but his body is filling out proportionally and he'll soon start to plump up. His brain is also growing quickly now, and his taste buds are continuing to develop. His lungs are developing "branches" of the respiratory "tree" as well as cells that produce surfactant, a substance that will help his air sacs inflate once he hits the outside world. His skin is still thin and translucent, but that will start to change soon.

24 weeks gave us a little scare.

Cody had been snowmobiling this past week and we were excited to have him home on Sunday night. They got back to Sioux Falls shortly after 6pm. Cody's snowmobile was in the back of the pickup and they were trying to get it onto the trailer....and he hurt his back. He called me on his way to Brandon and you could tell the pain was taking his breath away. Great, when I'm excited to have his help again with the kids, now he's worthless! He got to Brandon and was not able to hardly move. We all felt so bad. The kids were so excited to see him and he was in a lot of pain and unable to get down to play with them like he had wanted. I helped load up the car and we were headed back to Brewster.

On Sunday, my mom and I had gone into Sioux Falls to do a little shopping. Most of the day I had been complaining that my back was hurting. I chalked it up to being pregnant and just dealt with it. Later in the evening I kept telling my mom that my backache is starting to feel a little like the back labor I was having when the twins were born. I didn't know what the issue was.

I decided to drive back to Brewster and let Cody just rest in the passenger seat. We had gotten on the interstate and were busy chatting away, when I had to stop him mid-conversation. I mentioned that I am a little freaked out almost feel like I'm going into labor!  I don't know that I would have thought that much about it had I not been pregnant, but my increasing symptoms were kind of freaking me out. I mentioned possibly pulling off at Luverne and going to the Emergency Room. He thought if we were still this close to home, let's just turn around all together and head back to Sioux Falls. So I pulled off on the exit and headed back home. I had called my mom and told her we were coming back and I think I needed to go to the ER. Cody didn't think he would be able to come with me because of his back and thought it would be better if my mom took me in.

When we got back to Brandon, the kids were both sleeping in their car seats, so we unloaded them and put them straight to bed. Cody and my mom switched places and off we went. As we started driving, the pain was starting to intensify. My knuckles were turning white hanging on to the door handle and I was starting to panic. As we pulled off of the interstate, I had my mom pull over onto a side road because I was going to be sick. Now I'm really nervous.

As I walked into the ER, the lady at the front desk asked if I was in labor. I DIDN'T KNOW! I told her I'm only 24 weeks, but am having terrible back and lower abdomen pain. She got me upstairs to the OB unit right away. This was huge, because the waiting room was packed!  I was glad I was pregnant at this moment and didn't have to wait along with everyone else. As we were wheeling through the halls I was going to be sick again. Luckily we found a garbage can just in time!

Once upstairs, I was hooked up to monitors to check for any contractions and to look at baby's heartrate. They also checked my cervix. Everything on the baby's end was great, he was a rockstar!  He wasn't phased a bit and I was guaranteed I was not going into pre-term labor!

They were looking for something Renal, because my pain was primarily on my left side...possibly a urinary tract infection/bladder infection/kidney stones, etc. They placed a catheter to drain some urine for a sample and were going to look at it quickly. She also told me the doctor had ordered some Tylenol for my pain. TYLENOL!!  What the heck was Tylenol going to do for me?!?  Pretty sure I wouldn't be in the emergency room if Tylenol was going to cut the pain. She asked if I wanted something stronger and I didn't hesitate a bit!

The quick test came back showing a significant amount of blood in my urine, so the next step was to take me down for an ultrasound of my kidneys and bladder. Everything looked good. The tech didn't see any large stones or any swelling. The OB Dr. came to visit with me and said that just because the ultrasound didn't show any kidney stones, doesn't mean there weren't any there. She was pretty confident with my symptoms that's what was going on. She discussed the fact that there really isn't anything we could do, but to wait. She was going to send me home on some pain medication, what to watch for, and if I was ok the plan. I wasn't sure how I was going to deal with this pain, but if that's what the dr. felt most comfortable with, then that's what we were going to do.

As she was working on writing up discharge papers, I started throwing up again. When the doctor came back in and saw I was still getting sick, she had made the decision that she was going to keep me and admit me to the hospital. She said if I couldn't keep any pain meds down, then we couldn't control the pain, and that would be NO GOOD!  She was going to get me hooked up to an IV, start some fluids, and give me some anti-nausea medication as well as IV pain meds.

After about four hours I was up a regular room, and with the IV started, I began feeling much better. My mom stuck around until after they put my IV in (because we all know what a freak I am about needles) and then she went home around 12:30am to get some sleep. I didn't sleep well that night but was no longer in pain. I was feeling back to normal the next morning so they released me right away. We were out of there by 11:00 and off for some lunch. I haven't felt a bit of pain since, so they are thinking I must have passed the stone. I don't care what happened or how it happened, I'm just glad the pain is gone!  I compared this pain to that of being in labor. My doctor looked at me and agreed...she said kidney stones are probably the one thing that you could compare to labor pains...it was awful!

So there is my story (not so much in a nutshell) but a bit of an unexpected Sunday night.

23 weeks

Baby's now the size of a pomegranate!

Baby's little face is fully formed...minus the baby fat, of course. Also, with his sense of movement well developed by now, your baby can feel you dance. And now you may be able to see him squirm underneath your clothes. Blood vessels in his lungs are developing to prepare for breathing, and the sounds that baby's increasingly keen ears pick up are preparing him for entry into the outside world. Loud noises that become familiar now — such as a dog barking or the roar of the vacuum cleaner — probably won't phase him when he hears them outside the womb.

At our last ultrasound, the tech confirmed that baby boy's feet are way down low and his head is up towards my ribs. I wasn't surprised at all to hear it was his feet kicking me down there :)  He's been pretty hard to feel just by placing your hand on my belly, but boy is he active from the inside!  Tonight was the first time that I looked down and could actually see movement from the outside...it was kind of awesome!

22 weeks

Baby's now the size of a papaya!

Baby's settling into sleep cycles, snoozing about 12 to 14 hours a day. His lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and he's even developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums. His eyes have formed, but his irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment. If you could see inside your womb, you'd be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers his body and the deep wrinkles on his skin, which he'll sport until he adds a padding of fat to fill them in. Inside his belly, his pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.

a yucky saturday

We came home this weekend to attend the baptism of some good friend's little guy on Sunday. We were home Friday night. Neither one of the kids slept well AT ALL that night. We were up a lot with them all night. Saturday my parents went into Sioux Falls to get a new computer and some groceries. Cody, myself, and the kids stayed in Brandon and after the kids had lunch we met up with my mom to do some shopping. We went to Scheels, made a stop at Taco Bell, and then headed to Gordman's. We were in there about a half an hour before both kids started throwing fits and wanting out of the carts. Cody took Kaden and started walking around and Grandma took Kenley out, and she laid her head right down on her shoulder like she was going to go to sleep. I wasn't too far away when I heard my mom say "Holli, come here please, Kenley just threw-up."  I looked at the floor and I couldn't believe that had all come from this little girl. As I was walking up to them Kenley started in again, and just puked and puked and puked...I don't know that I've seen soo much throw up, even from an adult!  (I know, a little graphic, sorry).  My mom was holding her and she was throwing up directly into her chest. This was an incredible mess!  I froze...I didn't even know where to begin to attempt tackling this situation. Cody went to get somebody to help clean up, I ran to get new clothes for Kenley and mom, Cody ran up front to pay for them and we made our way into the restroom to get cleaned up.

Cody NEVER comes shopping with us, but he had nothing going on yesterday so he thought he would hang out with us.  Thank the Lord. I honestly don't know how we would have done it without him to take care of Kaden.

We packed the kids up and headed back to Brandon, praying she wouldn't get sick again in the car. Both kids fell asleep on the way home, so we were in good shape.

For the next four and a half hours, Kenley continued to throw up around the clock, every 15 minutes. She however completely emptied everything in her belly the first time, so these dry heaves were absolutely miserable for her and almost unbearable for me to watch. 8:40 was the last time she had thrown up and she then went to sleep. We kept her on the living room floor and took shifts sleeping with her. She slept throughout the night and has been much better this morning.

We've been pushing fluids with her this morning and are keeping her on the BRAT diet. Hopefully it was a short-lived flu and we won't have to deal with it from Kaden. Cross your fingers!

21 weeks

Baby is now the size of a banana!
Baby's digestive system is busy creating meconium (a tarry black substance made of swallowed amniotic fluid, digestive secretion, and dead cells), which will fill the first diaper after birth. You may soon feel like baby is practicing martial arts as initial fluttering movements turn into full-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also discover a pattern to the activity as you get to know baby better. In other developments, baby's eyebrows and lids are present now.

I continue to feel great!  As I'm sure most of you've remembered, we had our 21 week ultrasound on Tuesday (I honestly have been too busy to even sit down and blog about it until now...so sorry). Things looked really good with baby. This ultrasound was the "big" growth and measurement ultrasound and also because this pregnancy is considered an "IVF pregnancy" they did an Echocardiogram of the heart, as there are increased risks for heart defects. But all of baby's organs looked fantastic. We are growing like a weed too. Baby is measuring a week and 4 days ahead of schedule, weighing in at a whopping 1lb. 2oz. already!!

We met with the Perinatologist, who also looked at my placenta and discovered what they call a "marginal placenta previa."  Which basically means that my placenta is too close to my cervix at this point. It's not covering my cervix, which is good, but it's about as close as it can get. This can cause bleeding and problems with baby and mother during delivery, so it has to move away from the cervix before we get close to delivery. The doctors feel that it was found early enough in my pregnancy that they are confident as my uterus continues to grow that it will pull the placenta up and away and we shouldn't have any issues later down the road.

Here is a picture comparing both pregnancies at this stage in the game. I told you I feel just as big as I did with TWO babies.

The big news Cody and I were hoping to find out was the sex of this baby. WOOHOO...are we excited now!!!

Yep, IT'S A BOY!!!

I have always had the feeling it was going to be a boy. For some reason I could just picture us with another little boy. We are so very excited and things are finally starting to feel real. I am excited now to get talking about names and get the baby's room going!!

Meet our little guy:

IN LOVE with this song right now...

20 weeks...half way there!!

Baby's now the size of a cantaloupe!

Baby gulps down several ounces of amniotic fluid every day, both for nutrition and to practice swallowing and digesting. And, these days, those taste buds actually work! Baby is also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate in his bowels, and you'll see it in his first soiled diaper.

I cannot even believe that I am halfway done with this pregnancy. WOW!  Things could not have gone any better up to this point and I only hope the second half goes as well.

We have our next ultrasound on January 10th, which is when we will finally find out the sex. We are both very excited. I think at that point is when things will really sink in. We are going to have to get started pretty soon rearranging our house to make room for the baby's room. This room is currently where our laundry is as well as our computer, so these things will have to be relocated. But I'm excited to put together another nursery.

Baby is moving around like crazy.  I can't wait until it's strong enough to where Cody can start feeling it from the outside. I feel like I'm already a lot bigger than I was with the twins at this point. The dr. told me to expect that because my uterus was soo stretched out the first time that it will expand very easily this time around. That's for sure!
